Founded in 2012 by Kevin Johnson, Project Angel Fares is a 501c3 nonprofit that was created with the goal of “Providing Special Friends with Special Dreams.” Project Angel Fares serves families who have a child with a disability or special needs and otherwise would not be able to afford the opportunity to visit San Antonio to seeMorgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island.
Inspired after watching an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” Johnson and his wife were moved by a story of Jake Grys, who was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease) and dwarfism. It was at that moment that Jake touched our hearts forever.
Johnson and his wife shared their idea with Gordon Hartman, founder of Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island, and were encouraged by him and others to found Project Angel Fares.
The Grys family was the first family to visit Morgan’s Wonderland through Project Angel Fares. Despite his life-threatening disease and the fact that he continues to break bones monthly, Jake, who is now a young adult, is a remarkable man! (See Jake’s graduation photo below).
Project Angel Fares – Summer 2020
In May 2020 Project Angel Fares was welcomed into the BCFS System of nonprofit organizations.
The BCFS System has roots in San Antonio dating back to 1944 when it was founded as an orphanage and has since evolved into a global nonprofit organization providing emergency shelter, foster care and adoption, education services and much more for families and children in need. They include several separate nonprofit entities to include, Children’s Emergency Relief International (CERI), Breckenridge Village of Tyler (BVT), BCFS Educational Services, BCFS Health and Human Services, BCFS Health and Human Services’ Emergency Management (EMD) and now, Project Angel Fares.
As a caring partner, stakeholder, donor and friend of Project Angel Fares please know we will continue to work to provide families with children having special needs the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the joys of Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inspiration Island with a 4-day, 3-night trip with all travel expenses paid. A trip that may otherwise not be possible due to the heavy burdens of ongoing medical costs, transportation needs and cost restrictions. Project Angels Fares has been making dreams come true for these families since 2012.
We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished over the years and today, along with the long history and expertise of the BCFS System we plan to not only continue our work, but we hope to grow and serve more families and children in need.
Special thanks to our Founder, Kevin Johnson, The Johnson Bros. Bakery Supply and Morgan’s Wonderland for their support.
